Classic 105 FM: Kenya's Home of Good Times and Great Hits

Classic 105 FM is one of Kenya's most popular and longest-running English-language radio stations, widely recognised as the country's leading destination for timeless music and authentic conversation. Broadcasting on the 105.2 FM frequency in Nairobi, the station has built a devoted following among urban professionals and music lovers since its founding as part of the Radio Africa Group in 2000. Its signature blend of classic soul, R&B, pop, and adult contemporary hits — paired with bold, unfiltered talk shows — has made Classic 105 FM a cultural institution in Kenyan media.

The station's tagline, "Home of Good Times and Great Hits," captures its dual identity: a place where listeners come for legendary tracks from the '70s, '80s, '90s and beyond, and stay for some of the most candid and entertaining radio conversations in East Africa. In 2024, Classic 105 FM was nominated for the prestigious Starbrands Award as Kenya's Top National English Radio Station, a recognition of its sustained excellence, audience loyalty, and influence in the competitive Kenyan media market.

Classic 105 FM is part of the Radio Africa Group, one of East Africa's largest private media conglomerates. The group was co-founded in 2000 by Patrick Quarcoo, William Pike, and Kiprono Kittony, and operates a portfolio of leading media brands including Kiss 100 FM, Radio Jambo, Gukena FM, East FM, Homeboyz Radio, The Star newspaper. Following Quarcoo's retirement in mid-2024 after 24 years as CEO, Martin Khafafa — the former Chief Operating Officer — took the helm. The South African investment firm Lebashe Investment Group holds a 49% stake in the company, with the founding partners retaining the remaining shares.

History and Legacy

Classic 105 FM launched in 2000 as one of the early stations under the Radio Africa Group, which itself was founded that same year by Patrick Quarcoo and William Pike. The station quickly carved out a distinctive niche in the Kenyan radio landscape by targeting an adult audience with a curated mix of soul, R&B, and classic pop hits — a format that set it apart from the youth-oriented programming of its sister station, Kiss 100 FM.

Over the past two and a half decades, Classic 105 FM has grown from a Nairobi-based station into a nationwide broadcaster with transmitters in nine major cities across Kenya. The station's talk shows — particularly the Maina and King'ang'i morning show — have become part of Kenya's daily cultural fabric, regularly setting the national conversation on social media.

The station has also evolved with the digital age, maintaining a strong presence on streaming platforms and social media, and producing content for its website through the KenyaMOJA.com portal. In 2024, the station received recognition as Kenya's biggest English radio station through its nomination for the Starbrands Award.

Notable former presenters who have passed through Classic 105 FM's studios include Cess Mutungi, who departed the station in June 2024 after a distinguished career that also included stints at Nation FM, Kiss 100, Capital FM, and Hot 96.
