Radio 47: Kenya's Fastest-Growing Urban Swahili Station — Hapa Ndipo!
Radio 47 has emerged as one of the most remarkable success stories in Kenyan broadcasting. Launched on March 13, 2023, the station went from a newcomer to one of the country's top five radio stations in under two years — a feat unprecedented in Kenya's highly competitive media landscape. With its slogan Hapa Ndipo! ("Here Is Where!"), Radio 47 has positioned itself as Kenya's first fully audio-visual urban African Swahili radio station, combining traditional FM broadcasting with IP-based technology and a strong digital-first approach.
By Q1 2025, Ipsos research showed Radio 47 had captured a 7.5% listener share nationally, making it Kenya's second most popular radio station behind Radio Citizen (17.3%), and ahead of established brands like Kameme FM (6.9%) and Radio Jambo (6.1%). The station has retained a particularly strong presence in Nairobi, the Rift Valley, and the Coast. Just three months after launch, Radio 47 had already won a Bronze at the Kuza Broadcasting Awards by the Communications Authority of Kenya in the favourite radio station category.
Radio 47 is owned by Cape Media Limited, an affiliate of Mount Kenya University. The company is led by Prof. Simon Gicharu, the billionaire entrepreneur and educationalist who founded MKU — East and Central Africa's largest private university. Cape Media also operates TV47, the free-to-air television station that has similarly disrupted Kenya's TV market through aggressive talent recruitment and investment in content. The Group CEO is Mwenda Njoka, a former government press chief and CNN contributor, who was appointed in June 2024.

Radio 47's programming lineup is built around high-energy, personality-driven shows that span news, entertainment, sports, gospel, and cultural content. The station distinguishes itself through its audio-visual approach — many shows are broadcast simultaneously on video via digital platforms, blurring the line between radio and television. Key programmes include:
Nuru 47 (Weekdays, 4:00 AM – 6:00 AM)
The station's dawn gospel and inspirational show, hosted by the award-winning Eva Mwalili (known as Mama Taifa). The programme features segments including Ushuhuda, Tamkiwa Baraka, Neno, and Pasta Wako, and is designed to inspire listeners as they begin their day. Eva Mwalili was recruited from Milele FM and is one of Kenya's most celebrated gospel broadcasters.
Breakfast 47 — Mwashumbe na Mwakideu (Weekdays, 6:00 AM – 10:00 AM)
The station's flagship morning show, hosted by veteran radio journalists Emmanuel Mwashumbe (alias Mbappe) and Alex Mwakideu. With a combined experience of over 20 years, the duo delivers a dynamic mix of news, humour, political analysis, and listener interaction. Popular segments include Gumzo 47 (a politically charged discussion at 8:00 AM) and Kesi Mashinani (around 9:30 AM), where the hosts humorously resolve local disputes submitted by listeners via SMS. Mwashumbe previously hosted Radio Maisha's morning show, while Mwakideu spent eight years at Radio Maisha and five at Milele FM before joining Radio 47 in August 2023.
Staarabika 47 (Weekdays, 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM)
A mid-morning show originally hosted by Mwanaisha Chidzuga, the former KTN journalist and political figure. The show features entertaining and informative segments including Mheshimiwa's Corner, Mwanamke Mambo, Mautamu Tamu, and Msemo wa Leso, covering lifestyle, women's issues, politics, and entertainment.
Baze 47 (Weekdays, 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM)

The drive-time show hosted by Billy Miya and Mbaruk Mwalimu. The show combines humour, social commentary, and interactive audience segments, with the popular feature Suluhu 47 keeping listeners entertained during the evening commute. Both presenters were recruited from Radio Maisha.
Chemba by Dr Ofweneke (Weekdays, 8:00 PM – 11:00 PM)
Widely considered the most popular late-night radio show in Kenya. Hosted by comedian Dr Ofweneke — known as the "Duke of Kakamega" and "Mtetezi wa Wanyonge" (Defender of the Oppressed) — the show features his signature "Wisdom Number 1..." segment, where he delivers motivational and sometimes provocative commentary on masculinity, discipline, and resilience. Ofweneke's larger-than-life personality has made Chemba a cultural phenomenon, particularly among male listeners.
Bahari Ya Elimu (Saturday, 7:00 AM – 11:00 AM)
An educational and interactive weekend show hosted by veteran sports commentator Ali Hassan Kauleni, featuring quizzes, poetry sessions, and intellectual discussions.

On-Air Presenters
Radio 47's rapid rise has been driven in large part by an aggressive recruitment strategy that attracted some of Kenya's biggest radio and TV names. The station's arrival in the market was compared on social media to Chelsea FC or the Saudi Pro League's signing sprees. Key presenters include:
Emmanuel Mwashumbe (Mbappe) — A veteran Swahili broadcaster formerly of Radio Maisha, Mwashumbe is known for his smooth delivery, political awareness, and comedic timing. He co-hosts the morning show with Mwakideu.
Alex Mwakideu — One of Kenya's most experienced radio journalists with over 23 years in the industry. His career spans Baraka FM (Mombasa), Citizen TV, Radio Maisha (8 years), and Milele FM (5 years). He joined Radio 47 in August 2023 and has helped establish Breakfast 47 as one of Kenya's top morning shows.
Dr Ofweneke — A celebrated comedian and media personality whose late-night show Chemba has become a national sensation. His bold, opinionated style and motivational segments have attracted a devoted following.
Eva Mwalili (Mama Taifa) — An award-winning gospel presenter recruited from Milele FM. She hosts the dawn inspirational show Nuru 47 and is known for her powerful spiritual delivery.
Ali Hassan Kauleni (Hassan Mwana wa Ali) — A veteran Swahili sports commentator who serves as Sports Editor at Radio 47. He was recruited from Radio Maisha and is one of Kenya's most respected sports voices.
Billy Miya — Co-host of the drive show Maskani 47, recruited from Radio Maisha. Known for his entertaining stories and celebrity gossip.
Mbaruk Mwalimu — Billy Miya's co-host on Maskani 47, also formerly of Radio Maisha. The duo's chemistry has been a key asset for the station's afternoon lineup.
Manucho The Young Turk — Hosts the youth-oriented afternoon show Baze 47, bringing energy and digital-native sensibility to the station.
Other notable presenters and on-air talent include DJ Immo, Lucky Herriano, Mwanaisha Chidzuga, and Mkamburi Chigogo.
History and Growth
Radio 47's story begins with Prof. Simon Gicharu, the founder and chairman of Mount Kenya University, who had already established Cape Media Limited and launched TV47 in 2019. In 2022, Gicharu acquired radio frequencies from a private investor who had disposed of them following the general elections. Preparations for the new station began immediately, with Cape Media embarking on a high-profile talent recruitment drive that sent shockwaves through the Kenyan media industry.
The biggest casualty of Radio 47's talent raid was Radio Maisha (Standard Group), which lost several of its top presenters including Emmanuel Mwashumbe, Ali Hassan Kauleni, Lynda Oriaso, Geoffrey Mung'ou, and Beatrice Maganga. Milele FM (Mediamax Network) also lost key talent, most notably Eva Mwalili and later Alex Mwakideu. The recruitment strategy was deliberate — by assembling familiar voices that audiences already knew and loved, Radio 47 was able to launch with an established listener base from day one.
Radio 47 officially went live on March 13, 2023. The station's growth was immediate and dramatic. Within three months, it won a Bronze at the Communications Authority of Kenya's Kuza Broadcasting Awards. By mid-2024, it had entered Kenya's top five radio stations. By early 2025, Ipsos data placed it as the country's second most popular station nationally with a 7.5% audience share — a trajectory that has stunned industry observers and alarmed established competitors.
In April 2025, Cape Media signed a memorandum of understanding with the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) to promote micro, small, and medium enterprises, featuring five MSMEs weekly across Radio 47, TV47, and digital channels. This partnership reflected the station's broader ambition to be not just an entertainment platform but a vehicle for economic empowerment.
Radio 47's rise has been accompanied by challenges typical of fast-growing media organisations, including staff turnover and the departure of some high-profile presenters. Nevertheless, the station's combination of aggressive investment, top talent, extensive frequency coverage, and digital-first strategy has positioned it as a transformative force in Kenyan broadcasting.
