Kameme FM: Kenya's Pioneering Kikuyu Radio Station — Kayũ Ka Mũingĩ
Kameme FM holds a unique and historic place in Kenya's media landscape as the country's first vernacular radio station. Launched in 2000, it broke new ground by proving that local-language broadcasting could not only survive but thrive in a market that had been dominated by English and Kiswahili stations. Broadcasting primarily in the Kikuyu language on 101.1 FM in Nairobi, the station has become a cultural lifeline for millions of Kikuyu-speaking Kenyans at home and in the diaspora, earning its beloved slogan: Kayũ Ka Mũingĩ — "Voice of the People."
Kameme FM's success helped trigger a revolution in Kenyan broadcasting. Following its launch, dozens of vernacular stations emerged across the country, each catering to different linguistic communities. But Kameme remains the original trailblazer — a station that demonstrated the commercial viability and cultural importance of mother-tongue media. As of 2024, it was ranked as Kenya's second most popular vernacular radio station and the country's seventh most popular radio station overall, according to the Media Council of Kenya.
The station is owned by Mediamax Network Limited, one of Kenya's largest media conglomerates. Mediamax operates under TV Africa Kenya Holdings, which is associated with the Kenyatta family. The network's portfolio also includes K24 TV, Kameme TV, Milele FM, Meru FM, Mayian FM, Emoo FM, Pilipili FM, and the People Daily newspaper. The current Group CEO of Mediamax is Ken Ngaruiya.

History and Ownership
Kameme FM was founded by veteran journalist and entrepreneur Rose Kimotho and her business partner Simon Gikandi through their company, Regional Reach Limited. The station launched in 2000 with an investment of approximately KSh 40 million, initially broadcasting only in Nairobi and targeting the Kikuyu-speaking population of Central Kenya. It was a bold gamble — at the time, mainstream broadcasters focused on English and Kiswahili, and the prevailing wisdom held that vernacular radio had limited commercial potential.
The gamble paid off spectacularly. Kameme FM quickly became one of the most popular stations in the country among Kikuyu speakers, and its success inspired the creation of dozens of other vernacular stations across Kenya. By 2004, Rose Kimotho expanded the station's reach beyond Nairobi with new transmitters across the Mt. Kenya region and Rift Valley. In 2007, buoyed by Kameme's success, Kimotho and her team launched K24 TV as Kenya's first 24-hour all-news television channel.
However, the post-election violence of 2007/2008 devastated advertising revenues across the Kenyan media industry. Regional Reach struggled with a growing bank overdraft from CBA (now NCBA), and in 2009, Rose Kimotho transferred the company's assets — including Kameme FM and K24 — to TV Africa Kenya Holdings, a company associated with the Kenyatta family. The deal was formalised through a gazette notice dated August 14, 2009. Operations were subsequently placed under Mediamax Network Limited.
Under Mediamax's stewardship, Kameme FM expanded further, adding transmitters to reach 15 cities and towns across Kenya. The network also launched Kameme TV, giving the brand a television presence. Kameme FM has weathered significant challenges in recent years, including multiple rounds of staff layoffs at Mediamax driven by declining advertising revenues and the shift toward digital media. Despite these pressures, the station remains one of Mediamax's most valuable assets and continues to command a large and loyal audience.
Notable figures who have led Kameme FM over the years include Wamutitu (appointed in 2004 to oversee expansion), Wanjiku (who took over after Wamutitu's departure), Gathoni Wa Muchomba (who later became Kiambu Women Representative), and currently Gatonye wa Mbugua, who serves as Head of Radio.
Cultural Impact
Kameme FM's significance extends far beyond entertainment. The station played a pioneering role in legitimising vernacular broadcasting in Kenya, proving that mother-tongue media could be both commercially successful and culturally vital. For many Kikuyu speakers — especially older listeners in rural areas who are more comfortable in their first language — Kameme FM serves as a primary source of news, information, and civic engagement.
The station has also been instrumental in preserving Kikuyu cultural heritage through its music programming (particularly Mugithi), cultural segments like Thingira, and community-oriented shows like Njanjo Ya Muturire. For the Kenyan diaspora, Kameme FM's online streaming provides a vital connection to home, language, and culture.
